TIMELESS ALLURE
A capital place of light, order and tranquillity

With their children now in their teens and their lifestyle changing accordingly, a young French couple wanted a new look for the kitchen at the back of their Victorian terraced home in central London.

The Brief
The clients were very keen that the room should not feel like a typical kitchen - there should be no wall-mounted units, and no gadgets or small appliances on view. They wanted it to feel light and airy and to have lots of clean, modern lines without losing sight of the fact that their home is a period building.

The designer's solution embraces simple, timeless elegance. Tall, Shaker-style cabinetry and the natural texture of the slatted oak Hygge base cabinets are skilfully combined with a fresh white marble-effect quartz worksurface to make the most of the room's natural light, height, and length. A skillful layout provides subtly defined zones for cooking, storage, eating, and general living and creates a room with an organic, evolved over time yet modern look, in keeping with the age of the house and without chasing trends. Spray-painted black for stylish durability, the Shaker cabinets enclose an integrated Liebherr fridge-freezer and abundant pantry space, and each of the white-pigmented oak Hygge drawers contains a bespoke organised interior so the owners can keep the surfaces clear of clutter.

Special Features
Just two door handles: almost imperceptible against the black door but tactile and beautiful, a pair of black-finished handles make opening and closing the fridge and freezer doors easy, stable, and secure.
Finishing touches: a floating shelf of oak, to show off family treasures. Bar seating is arranged around a corner of the island, rather than along one side, and looking into the room, towards the dining table, is more sociable.
