LIMED OAK
Perfect form and function

Using the finest quality materials and paying exquisite attention to every detail of the design and fitting process was essential so this kitchen in a newly built Swedish villa will stand the test of time as its owners, a young couple, bring up their family.

The Brief
The clients wanted a kitchen that will be as hardwearing as it is stylish in a classic contemporary way. They spend a lot of time outside, even in winter, and really appreciate the look of natural materials that have been carefully crafted so that they age beautifully, without lots of hard work to maintain them. Also, the days in Sweden are very short in winter so anything that helps make the room feel light, bright, and warm was essential.

The designer's solution required the tall cabinets to be built so they appear to float just above the floor and hover just shy of the ceiling, an effect made possible by the straight lines of the villa's modern construction. The design showcases the magnificent solid oak outframe doors, which have been limed to a pale but warm and buttery suede finish that in turn lets the stainless-steel worktops and splashback gleam. A downward-extraction Bora is set into the matt-finish stone selected for the waterfall island, which seems to rise up out of the concrete floor, while the kitchen window embrasure has also been lined with stainless steel, to reflect as much natural light as possible into the room all year round.

Special Features
Putting it on a plinth: so that its upward-downward door action is not impeded, the dishwasher cabinet is set on a low plinth the face of which is clad with a sliver of limed oak, to blend with the rest of the woodwork.

Finishing touches: stainless steel worktops are typical in Swedish kitchen; as the scratches through daily use grow in number, it achieves a beautiful brushed-steel finish.
