Island in the sun

Project Year2021
Project LocationLondon

A full renovation of a classic Victorian townhouse in north London deserved a brand new kitchen for the new extension.

The island in between the two doors that link the extension with the front of the house.
The Brief

The clients' rear extension includes a bi-fold door that opens the new room up fully to the garden, which was also re-designed at the same time, and they wanted a sleek, minimalist kitchen to sit in the sweet spot of the open-plan layout so it is a major point of focus inside and out, especially when the weather allows the two spaces to be used as one. They wanted the island to have black sides, to coordinate with the black-painted frame of the bi-fold door, and with plenty of seating elsewhere, the couple initially said no to a bar on the island but later asked for one to be added at the garden end.

The designer's solution strategically positions the island between the two doors that connect the extension to the front of the house, allowing ample space on one side for the dining table and chairs, and a clear gangway on the other, between the island and the flat-fronted, oak-veneered cabinets along the wall. The cabinets are painted a pale mint green, which not only highlights the black-stained oak sides of the island but also draws attention to the sculpted frame effect created by the overhead cabinets that connect the tall units on either side of the sink.

Special Features

In the zone: To accommodate the standard door action of the fridge and freezer, they were integrated into the tall cabinets alongside the ovens, positioned furthest away from the garden. This placement ensures that at the garden end, the pantry doors and the utensil drawers below can remain open without causing any obstruction.

Finishing touches: with the hob on the island, an upstand is sufficient protection for the wall behind the sink.
