Hard-working home comforts

Project Year2016
Project LocationNotting Hill

With two dogs and a busy lifestyle, the owners of this large townhouse in central London need a kitchen that is timeless and hard-wearing.

An oversized stainless steel-clad island as a powerplay against the run of simple white, flat-front cabinetry.
The Brief

The clients wanted the kitchen to look contemporary and professional, with their favourite material, stainless steel, as the main focus of attention in their recently built, high-ceilinged rear extension, which is furnished for dining and relaxed seating, and which flows out through glazed bi-fold doors into the newly planted and paved garden.

We had seen pictures from another of Sola Kitchens’ projects with a stainless steel island which we fell in love with. We wanted to have a very modern feel to the space.

Mr & Mrs Feltham

The designer's solution makes a bold statement with an oversized, stainless steel-clad island that contrasts powerfully against the simple white, flat-front cabinetry along the back wall. The island features spacious drawers with bespoke organizers for cutlery and utensils, while long steel bar handles on both sides of the 1.2-meter-wide, Silestone-topped centerpiece lend it a sleek, semi-professional look. To frame the workstation and accentuate the impressive height of the white-painted room, a pair of tall, double-fronted cupboards were incorporated—not only to house the fridge-freezer at one end and a pair of Siemens ovens at the other but also to serve as bookends that highlight the stainless steel Bertazzoni hob with its matching extractor unit and the chrome tap of the main sink. The cleverly positioned right-hand cupboard, set just beyond the line of the hidden steel beam, seamlessly blends the kitchen into the living space, enhancing the overall flow of the room.

Special Features

Decoratively practical: a pair of floating shelves are strong enough to hold cookery books as well as display pieces while, at the garden end of the island, a pair of power sockets are set upside down into the side panel so the flexes of gadgets stored in the drawer sit flat on the worktop when in use.

Finishing touches: the large expanse of stone splashback runs all the way to the top of the tallest cabinets, providing maximum easy-to-clean wall protection and highlighting the stainless steel appliances and clean, graphic lines of the kitchen design.
