Simplicity was the order of the day
A new extension at the back of this Victorian terraced home has given its owners a spectacularly bright space that needed a no fuss, no frills kitchen.
The Brief
The clients wanted the space to feel airy and calm and for the kitchen layout to leave them with plenty of open space so they can be flexible about where they place the dining table and chairs, to cook, eat, relax, and entertain comfortably all year round, overflowing into the garden when the weather allows. They wanted the island to face the garden, and for it to have a completely clear surface.
The designer's solution combines flat-fronted cabinetry painted in a pale duck-egg blue with a high-gloss finished Dekton stone for the worktops and splashback, creating a very clean-lined, ethereal ambience enhanced by the shafts of light from the ladder-glazed skylight. Long, black steel handles on the tall cabinets and base drawers reference the frame of the bi-fold doors, but the overhead cabinets have push-to-open doors, to keep the look plain and simple. The wine fridge and ovens are positioned along the wall, closest to the internal door so the family can get at them easily when entertaining in the front room, while the hob, also on the wall run, is placed closer to the kitchen-garden dining area.
Special Features
Let it hang out: an overhang at one end of the island helps prevent hips from bashing against the black steel towel/oven glove rail below it.
Finishing touches: the floating shelf that runs across the top of the splashback is painted to match the cabinetry so it registers on the eye and echoes the effect of the overhead cabinets above the splashback on the other wall.
