The young couple that owns this Victorian terraced house in south-west London was having the basement dug out when Sola Kitchen's design team was invited to work with the architect to create this statement kitchen extension.

An artful combination of raised and field borders used to elevate Sola Kitchen's Shaker style.
The Brief

The clients wanted the cabinetry in their kitchen to have very detailed and classically inspired moulded facias, to make the room a special feature within the house. The layout and fittings needed to be both functional and elegant, designed in a way that could seamlessly serve as a drawing room cum dining room, making the space perfect for elegant entertaining. The range cooker was a feature they wanted to show off, and elements such as the extraction system and the air conditioning unit needed to be hidden. Other essential features that needed to be included were a butler's sink and a freezer with an integrated ice-maker.

The designer's solution showcases an artful combination of raised and field borders used to elevate Sola Kitchen's Shaker style for the hand-painted wall and base cabinets, with tongue and groove panelling, hand-painted in the same Railing colour by Farrow & Ball, for the island. Heavy matt brass handles add a dash of industrial weight to the classic scheme, and complement the range cooker perfectly, while a fine white Macaubus quartzite used for the worktops, splashback, and a display shelf beneath the skylight inspires images of a smart country house.

Special Features

No peeking: careful planning and creative flare was needed to accommodate the air conditioning unit, with a very bespoke cabinet designed to fit around it exactly while the disguise that was necessary to hide the ducting was made into a decorative feature using a chunky moulding across the full run, further enforcing the drawing room aesthetic overall.

Finishing touches: Farrow & Ball's Railings blue colour was chosen to colour-match with the veining of the quartz as much as it was to emphasis the beauty of the fine architectural detailing on the cabinetry.
