Pale tones and classical architectural details to please the eye and calm the soul
Although identical in external appearance and interior layout, the developer who built both this and the twin property for sale next door had a different vision for this kitchen, as it was going to be her own.
The Brief
The client wanted her kitchen to have the same layout as in the one that Sola Kitchen had created for the adjoining house, but with classically styled cabinetry rather than the modern look that appears next door, and with a clear sense of symmetry. She also wanted a grand hood to hide the extraction system, a waterfall island, and a hanging rail for her favourite cooking paraphernalia.
The designer's solution uses Sola Kitchen's Shaker-style cabinetry but with lay-on doors (also known as outframe doors) instead of in-frame ones, all painted white and all handleless, bar those of the fridge-freezer and the double-doored breakfast pantry, both of which are arranged perfectly symmetrically around the block of ovens behind the island. At right angles to this, the grandly sculptural cooker hood takes its cue from the double-depth cornicing of the cabinets, while the ornately veined splashback plays nicely with the flamed Nero Assoluto waterfall island.
Special Features
Hang on: the housing of the air conditioning unit works as a perfect base from which to hang a stainless-steel rail for the client's kitchenware, as well as the pendant lighting opposite.
Finishing touches: so that the front edges of the built-in wine rack and the tray rack that is built into the base cabinetry directly below lie flush with all the door fronts, a second frame has been laid over the front of each of the bespoke features.
