The beams of this large house in Surrey were an important consideration when the Scandinavian owners invited Sola Kitchens to design and measure up for a new kitchen that would be the essence of Scandinavian open-plan country living.

The island with a pale wood worktop, supported by legs and a double-depth storage cabinet.
The Brief

The client wanted a classically styled L-shaped kitchen with an island that would double as a table for informal dining. All the appliances, including a Gaggenau wine cooler and the larder, were to be incorporated within a single run of cabinetry along one wall, and the working areas beneath a run of overhead cabinets on the other wall. She also wanted to be able to have her Royal Copenhagen china on display and for it to be easily accessible when laying the formal dining table, which stands on the other side of the double-sided suspended fireplace.

The new kitchen has been a game changer, transforming the way the family lives, eats, and socialises. We have nearly all our meals on the island now. It’s just a lovely area to sit, and when the chandelier above the island is lit, it feels so cosy!

The designer's solution uses custom hand-painted Shaker-style cabinetry with brushed stainless-steel knobs and bar handles to complement the stainless-steel ovens and the ice-maker left visible in the door of the plumbed-in freezer. The island's pale wood worktop, by Danish maker Spekva, rests on legs at one end and a double-depth storage cabinet at the other, with the side nearest the formal dining table left open, so the client's treasured china can be seen and enjoyed. Offsetting the double butler's sink with a strikingly veined worktop and splashback keeps the overall aesthetic on the modern country road.

Special Features

No smoking: the Gutmann extraction system for the hob is hidden within the run of overhead cabinets.

Finishing touches: the kitchen island with seating on both sides doubles up as an informal and cosy dining area. The wood burner adds to the homely and warm atmosphere in this kitchen
