STATEMENT KITCHEN

A joint exercise in professional design partnership

The extension of this Victorian terraced house in Clapham was being built to house the kitchen so it was essential that Sola Kitchen's team worked closely with the architect and the rest of project team to ensure the design and build all went according to plan.

A feature wall of Shaker-style cabinets that flank a run of overhead and base cabinets.
The Brief

The clients do a lot of cooking and a gas and induction mixed fuel hob, 76cm Gaggenau ovens, and a big larder were hugely important elements in the new kitchen that they wanted Sola Kitchens to create for them. They planned to have a large fridge-freezer and needed plenty of storage space. They also wanted a glazed cabinet to show off their glassware, and a bookcase for their cookery books.

Our clients recommended Sola Kitchens for their excellent service and attention to detail. The brief the client gave to the Sola Kitchen's designer, was to ‘maximise the space and accommodate working cooks as both love cooking!

Rory Gordon, Good London Builders

The designer's solution uses the full height and length of one wall of the new extension to create a feature wall of tall Shaker-style cabinets that flank a run of overhead and base cabinets in the middle, with an existing structural support in the same wall used to create the impression of two work stations - one around the Shaws inset sink, the other a clear bank of worksurface - that, with the hob in the island, form the classic working kitchen triangle.

Special Features

Made to fit: the slab of granite for the impressively long island– it measures three metres and is four centimetres deep – needed to be sourced and secured early on in the design process, and then be polished and the mitred edges cut in, to prevent any delays during installation. Only when it was on site could the paint colour for the cabinetry be precisely colour-matched and the timbers handpainted in situ.

Finishing touches: to keep the view from the front of the house, along the gangway, as clear as possible, the glazed doors of the glassware cabinet are bifolds, with an open-front shelving stack to make it quick and easy to get at those essential cookery books.
