BLAZING BRASS

Raising the bar

Project Year2017
Project LocationNotting Hill

As part of an important renovation project, the owners had a spectacular glazed room built to house an open-plan kitchen and dining room arranged over two levels at the back of their spectacular home in central London.

A bespoke antiqued extraction hood fixed to the marble splashback.
The Brief

The client, a professional private chef, wanted a kitchen that was essentially for family use and for entertaining, and which made good use of the glazed, double-height ceiling and access down to the basement level, where the dining room is situated. It also needed to have a huge pantry, professional-standard appliances, and plenty of storage space so she could also fulfill her catering work. She also asked for a combination of long bar and knob handles in brass.

The designer's solution features full-height wall cabinets with brass bar handles, drawing attention to the impressive high ceilings while providing ample storage to keep all kitchen essentials neatly tucked away. Tall base drawers offer space for larger pans, and the two ovens are cleverly concealed within a tall cabinet opposite the island, equipped with a pocket door that slides out of sight when in use. However, the standout element of the space is a stunning three-metre-wide piece of Calacatta marble, which was carefully lowered through the house on a specially built track and securely mounted on the wall before the kitchen installation began. This marble masterpiece truly elevates the entire design.

Special Features

Special surface: a bespoke antiqued finish was created to make a feature of the extraction hood fixed to the marble splashback.

Finishing touches: all the drawers and cabinets are fitted with bespoke internal organisers and set on slightly shorter plinths, to achieve the extra height they needed. Small appliance cabinets are also fitted with power sockets and one of the shelves beside the two ovens in particular can be pulled out so the client can use the mixer without having to lift it in and out of the cabinet.
