Having lived in Denmark for some years, the owners of this newly built architect-designed home in Britain were keen to recreate the Danish look they love, with natural wood the star of the kitchen.

The impressive expanses of solid oak outframe doors and drawers
The Brief

The clients feel very at home with the minimalist, sleek style of Scandinavian interiors and they wanted their new kitchen to be authentically Danish and to sit well with the furniture and lighting they had brought with them from their previous home. The kitchen would be open plan to the dining room, with a Dinesen floor throughout, and instead of veneer, the cabinetry must be solid oak and oil-finished to match the flooring.

The designer's solution expertly emphasises the architectural lines of the space, featuring impressive expanses of solid oak outframe doors and drawers, handleless grooves, and a light and dark colour palette that enhance the room's dramatic play of light and shade. The wall-mounted cabinetry is set back from the main kitchen wall, allowing the sink, range cooker, and the beautiful woodgrain to be bathed in natural light from the letterbox-shaped lightwell above. Matching oak panels rise above the cabinets, lining the interior wall of the lightwell and drawing the eye upward, while a lava-stone splashback with a built-in shelf adds a dramatic contrast and subtly mirrors the dark metal frames of the garden doors.

Special Features

All to hand - a small prep sink and a trough have been carved out of the island's worktop with the latter filled by an oak liner cut to to hold kitchen knives, herb pots and kitchen paper.

Finishing touches: a distinctive volcanic lavastone was used for the worktops, splashback, plinth for the island, and for the area of floor between the island and the Gaggenau range cooker.
