The Brief

The clients wanted a kitchen design with clean, minimalist lines and a modern aesthetic. The primary focus was to create an island with an uncluttered surface, suitable for both preparation and socialising, while ensuring that the functional elements, such as the hob and sink, were placed neatly along the wall to maximise the open space. They wanted a streamlined and efficient layout that would not only serve their cooking needs but also integrate seamlessly into the open-plan environment for family life and entertaining. The materials and finishes had to complement this sleek vision, with attention to functionality, design cohesion, and high-quality craftsmanship.

The designer's solution uses Sola Kitchen's white pigmented oak Skog cabinetry with flat-fronted cabinetry hand-painted with deep blue, black metal detailing and a white Dekton worksurface to create a smart and fresh look. Having fallen in love with the downdraft Bora system, the clients were happy for it to be integrated into the island and asked the architect to move the window to the middle of the wall so that the sink and dishwasher could be included in the wall run, but be close to the tall cabinetry housing the crockery and cooking utensils.

Special Features

Hey good looking: a column of oak-lined open shelving was incorporated into the turn of the tall cabinetry, to break up the run of otherwise solid doors; the cabinet below is fitted with swing-out shelving to make full use of every inch of space.

Finishing touches: an upstand instead of a splashback with variable heights was run along the wall and behind the sink so as not to overclutter the scheme and distract from the effect of the Skog cabinetry and Crittall-style doors and black-framed window.
