MARBLE RADIANCE

In the garden room

Project Year2022
Project LocationLondon

A new rear extension to take in the side return of this London home has been architect-designed with a striking glazed roof, opening the new room up to the sky.

Clean architectural lines, natural materials and a monochrome palette warmed by the honeyed tones of solid oak.
The Brief

The clients wanted a kitchen that would make the most of this new space and sit well with their eclectic collection of furniture, so the cabinetry needed to reference the Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, and Modernist movements in its detailing. They particularly asked for the cabinetry to include plenty of natural oak, to reference the garden as well as the furniture, and for there to be no handles to interrupt the flat surfaces.

The designer's solution uses clean architectural lines, natural materials, and a monochrome palette warmed by the honeyed tones of solid oak to establish a kitchen that feels as finely crafted and beautiful as it is practical and liveable. The fronts of the oak base drawers are ornamented with a 40mm-deep relief, creating a rich, coffered effect at floor level while rising up beside them, a row of cabinets with sleek, flat-fronted oak doors is built into the wall. With long, vertical fingerholes instead of handles, the doors closest to the kitchen enclose a pantry and fridge-freezer while the pair spray-painted white open to reveal a fitted desk.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Let there be light: the tall cabinets are designed to hover just below the ceiling, maintaining the room’s sense of lightness while also providing ventilation outlets for the appliances

Finishing touches: the black marble, with its irregular diagonal white veining, introduces a striking and unique chiaroscuro effect, perfectly reflecting the interplay of light and shadow created by the room’s multiple skylights.
