INDUSTRIAL CHIC
Take a good look at all the points of view

For the owners of this ultra-modern-extended Victorian home in London, the kitchen needed to look as good from above as it does from ground level.

The Brief
The clients wanted a visually striking kitchen that would not only enhance the overall value of their home but also seamlessly coordinate with the modern design aesthetic of the rest of the house. A key priority was to maintain ample wall space to display their cherished artwork, making the kitchen a cohesive part of the home’s artistic expression. Additionally, they requested a monochrome colour scheme to create a sleek, contemporary look that would complement both the modern architecture and their art collection, ensuring the kitchen felt stylish and minimalist yet functional.

The designer's solution was inspired by the double-height space, strategically positioning a stone-wrapped island with a waterfall end and a deep overhang for bar seating beneath the mezzanine. The gleaming white porcelain surface of the island reflects light into the back corner of the room, enhancing the overall brightness. In contrast, a run of black spray-painted tall cabinets lines the back wall, housing the Liebherr fridge-freezer and Siemens ovens, creating a sleek, modern balance between light and dark elements in the kitchen.

Special Features
Be seen: using a painted stain rather than a laminate allows the texture and pattern of the wood grain to show through the cabinetry, adding another layer of texture and dynamism to the monochrome scheme.

Finishing touches: putting the tall cabinets beneath the mezzanine and using floating shelves instead of overhead cabinetry ensures the views through and from above the space are uninterrupted, and walls can be decorated with pictures and ornaments.
