BLUE HUES

It needs to work like clockwork

Project Year2020
Project LocationKingston

With four children and a lot of foster children, things are always on the go for the owners of this house in Kingston and the kitchen in particular is frequently as busy as Piccadilly Circus.

A huge island at the heart of a U-shaped compilation of tall and base Shaker-style cabinets.
The Brief

The client needed her new kitchen to have plenty of work and storage space, and ultra-efficient cooking facilities. She had pre-planned the contents of every drawer and cabinet meticulously and needed the Sola Kitchens designer to ensure there was not just sufficient storage space but that everything would fit inside perfectly. She wanted a double-depth island so it could also be used as a dining table, and co-ordinating cabinetry for the separate utility room beside the kitchen.

The designer's solution places a huge island at the heart of a U-shaped compilation of tall and base Shaker-style cabinets, with plenty of space to eat and carry on with family life well out of the way of anyone using the double stacks of Miele ovens or at the gas and induction dual fuel hob integrated on the blind side of the 2.7-metre-wide island. In the corner of the tall run of cabinets, which are painted in Bone China Blue by Little Green, are two double-fronted larders – Sola Kitchen's classic breakfast pantry with racked shelving on the insides of the doors, and a second standing beside it that is fitted with pocket doors to avoid door clashes- and all the drawers beneath the Dekton worktops are bespoke designed to fit the client's possessions precisely.

Special Features

A home for everything: every inch of space has been given a useful function - the corner base cabinet beside the sink is fitted with swing-out shelves for baking paraphernalia and ovenware, for instance, while pots for the hob are stored in the island.

Finishing touches: while the end of the island nearest the sink is fitted with a useful towel rail, at the other end, a bookshelf has been built into the base, which is painted in Dock Blue by Little Green. One of the two drawers above it is where the takeaway menus are kept.
