MONOLITHIC MARBLE
There is no functionality without beauty

In the new extension to their home, the owners wanted a kitchen with clean lines and a pared back simplicity that epitomises Scandinavian style.

The Brief
The clients wanted a statement island that would give the living-dining space a bold talking point and complement the modernist fireplace, unfussy cabinetry, and a pale colour palette to contrast with the natural wood and make the room feel bright and calm.

The designer's solution is a Scandinavian clean design at its finest. The white sintered stone island, with impeccably mitred edges, is fitted with deep storage invisible to anyone sitting at the dining table, and its solid, sculpted form is perfectly off-set by the flat-fronted, invisible handle cabinetry that lines the walls behind and to the side. Large base drawers provide plenty of storage, and the floating wall cabinetry, which incorporates the extraction system for the gas hob, is hung like a piece of artwork, with lots of empty wall space all around it so the room feels open and airy.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Cool colour: The clients' interior designer chose a chalky grey-white paint colour for the walls to keep the overall look very light, fresh and soft, even on grey, rainy days in winter.
Finishing touches: A short upstand was added to protect the painted wall rather than cover it up with a splashback that might distract attention from the magnificent island.
