LIVING KITCHEN
A fresh start

With two young children in the house, the kitchen in this London home is always frantically busy so a hyper-efficient work triangle, and fresh-looking, durable surfaces are all essential requirements.

The Brief
The clients love the typically Scandinavian pale wood and white look and wanted a kitchen that would look good with the new oak floor they were having installed. It also needed to withstand daily life with youngsters which meant quick and easy-to-clean work surfaces and plenty of space so the children could sit and do homework or talk to their parents while food is being prepared. Having a smart, minimalist and clean-lined appearance that can be shown off to friends was also important, especially as the children get older and the clients entertain more.

The designer's solution perfectly embodies Scandinavian design principles in action: limed ash cabinetry is thoughtfully paired with outframe-door style cabinets spray-painted in white, adding focus to the overall scheme. Key areas for cooking, food preparation, and storage, including an integrated Liebherr fridge-freezer, are strategically arranged to optimise the kitchen's functionality. Meaningful and beautiful features abound, such as the oak-lined breakfast pantry doors beside the island that can be left open for easy access during meals, drawers with bespoke interior fittings and power sockets discreetly fitted below the island worktop for convenient gadget use. Additionally, a towel rail that slides into its unique cubby hole keeps tea cloths within reach but, with a simple push of the hip, neatly out of the way.

Special Features
Island beauty: a moulded stainless-steel trough set into the island worktop is a perfect spot for the herb garden, an edible and ornamental way to screen the sink tap behind. Alternatively, fill it with ice and start chilling the wine for the party.

Finishing touches: for maximum function, the sink is set at one end of the island, so the owner has plenty of space to prepare food while cooking on the Bora hob behind. A marbled finish for the splashback and waterfall island is a decorative flourish that pulls the look together.
