MODERN HARMONY
An exercise in natural simplicity

The last thing the owners of this newly extended terraced house in west London wanted was to clutter up the light-filled space with large banks of impractical cabinetry and dark materials so they turned to Sola Kitchens for help.

The Brief
The clients were very clear that their new kitchen should be Japandi in style, combining Scandinavian functionality with the minimalism and natural textures that epitomise Japanese interior design. They wanted the cabinetry to have clean lines and a simple white finish, a white stone worktop that would be practical but stylish, and for the warming tones of a blond wood to complement the wood floor and the neutral colour scheme that the interior designer-owner planned to use to furnish the rest of the open-plan space.

The designer's solution is a harmonious blend of modern and natural elements carefully chosen to coordinate with the wider living area. Carved out of solid oak, the fluted surfaces of the island base and overhead cabinets are juxtaposed with flat-fronted cabinetry, the birch-veneered doors of which are spray-painted white for a pristine finish, while brass bar handles and a lightly grey-veined white Nilestone for the worksurface and island add touches of luxury and sophistication. Every inch of the peaceful scheme has been carefully planned to enclose all the items necessary in a working kitchen: in addition to the storage surrounding the fridge-freezer, sink, ovens, and pantry, plenty of space (and a power socket) has also been provided for eating and working at the island, away from the integrated Bora hob with downdraft extraction. Beneath the worksurface, meanwhile, is a masterful arrangement of a washing machine and tumble-drier, wine cooler, cabinets for pots and pans, and drawers for cutlery, oils, and spices.

Special Features
Two endings: instead of a double-sided stone waterfall island, the client wanted the oak cabinetry to form the end closest to the sitting room, so it assimilates seamlessly with the rest of the room.

Finishing touches: after detailed discussions about where to position the black Quooker tap on the double sink, the client asked for it to be set off-centre, so it can be used to fill the smaller of the two bowls without having to use the extension hose.
