Designing a kitchen for the owner of this listed townhouse in London was not without its challenges, from its slice-of-cheese-shaped dimensions (narrow at the front and wider at the back), overall narrow width and high ceilings, to the fact that the room's original period features – plaster mouldings, skirting boards and a rather handsomely ornamented chimney breast –could not be removed or altered in any way.

Handless, flat-fronted cabinetry hand-painted a soft grey-white colour.
The Brief

The client had a very minimalist look in mind for her kitchen, with pale painted cabinetry that would create a restful atmosphere, particularly when the doors to the dining room are folded open, and make the room look larger than it really is. With her work as a chef very much in mind, she also needed to have a large pantry and plenty of workspace and storage and her Sub-Zero fridge was essential, as were the dishwasher and bins.

The designer’s solution was refined from a concept by the client’s architect, featuring handleless, flat-fronted cabinetry, hand-painted in a soft grey-white colour to stand out against the white background subtly. Arranged symmetrically along both longest walls, all appliances are positioned near the window, out of sight when entering the room or sitting in the dining area, with the hob’s extraction system hidden within the cabinetry above. The narrow island, topped with a Caesarstone work surface, houses a stainless steel double sink, bins, and a dishwasher underneath while maintaining enough space for easy access to the wall cabinetry and the client has enough room to turn and use all the worksurfaces easily and safely. To incorporate the bar seating the client wanted, the architect collaborated with Sola Kitchens to design a steel frame, seamlessly integrated into the island to support the waterfall extension of the worktop.

Special Features

Designed to fit: the base cabinets feature stepped backs, allowing them to fit over skirting boards without compromising internal storage.

Look inside: LED strips light up the pantry as soon as the doors are opened.

Finishing touches: although the room is narrow, reducing cabinet and work surface depth, the high ceilings ensure ample storage height, while preserving the visibility of the original decorative plaster mouldings.

Description
The handleless, flat-fronted cabinetry, hand-painted in a soft grey-white chosen by the architect, subtly contrasts with the white background. Arranged symmetrically along both longest walls, appliances are positioned near the window, furthest from view upon entering the room or sitting in the dining area. The hob's extraction system is discreetly hidden within the cabinetry above.
