MINT REFLECTIONS
Drawn to nature

Newly engaged and creating their first family home in this Victorian end-of-terrace house was an opportunity to create a kitchen that will see the period building and its new architect-designed rear extension as well as the owners into the next stages of their new life together.

The Brief
The clients like to cook and wanted the kitchen to make the most of the garden views. They wanted a modern take on a traditional kitchen, including a Belfast sink and space for a dining table, and had chosen a colour and materials palette inspired by biophilic principles of design - greens, natural woods, metals, and stone.

The designer's solution combines Shaker-style ash cabinetry spraypainted a soft sage green with Sola Kitchen's Skog panelling and a round-edged quartz worktop for the modern classic and child-friendly look the clients requested. A bulkhead between the two doorways has been artfully filled with a fluted-glass-fronted pantry, with oak-front drawers to tie in with the stairs and open shelving, and a black framework to coordinate with the black iron Hendle & Hendle handles and black-finish appliances.

Special Features
Nice thinking about the price tag: book-matched quarter-sawn veneers were used for the faces of the drawers on the blind side of the island, giving the client the Skog look they loved without breaking the budget.

Finishing touches: the decorative floating oak shelf is fitted with an LED striplight underneath, which the clients can adjust to create different moods to suit every occasion.
