MODERN ELEGANCE
Showing how it's done

Cornflake is a luxury audio-visual systems business that has its own interior-designed London showhome fitted with its intuitive technology so its customers can experience the technology in action in a real-life home setting.

The Brief
The client, Cornflake, an audio-visual systems business, wanted a statement kitchen that is also fully functional, with ovens, a fridge and wine cooler, and plenty of space for professional caterers and guests as Cornflake also uses the showhome to host events. The room's principal function, though, was to look stunning, modern but not extremely so, to assimilate seamlessly with the existing high-end interiors and reflect Conflake's exclusive concierge service.

The designer's solution is a rich, layered combination of traditional beaded doors of oak veneer stained black to show off the beautiful graining of the Gustavian cabinets and emphasise the height of the room, and the slatted, white-stained oak of Hygge cabinetry for the modern-looking island. A pair of Gaggenau ovens, one on either side of the sink, are not just obvious symbols of the scheme's symmetry. On closer inspection, you'll notice that the outer edges of the cabinetry are perfectly aligned with the hinges of the doors in the front of the island, a balanced sophistication that is topped off by the movement, chocolate colour, and grand scale of the natural stone splashback and matching worktops.

Special Features
Natural camouflage: objects appear to float in mid-air above the sink but are in fact resting on a shelf cut from the same stone used for the splashback.

Finishing touches: an additional strip of oak veneer has been invisibly joined down one side of the cabinet door of the 700 mm-wide wine fridge, to make it the same width as the 760 mm-wide cabinet door to the Gaggenau fridge on the left.
