With its antiqued brass, stainless steel and matt painted finishes gently glowing in the light, this industrial-style kitchen in north London is a worthy award-winner.

Industrial-style kitchen with antiqued brass kitchen island

It was the chance discovery of a Danish kitchen that led us to Sola Kitchens, where we found a designer who could recreate the look. When I collected the design drawings, I said, ‘This is the kitchen!' After months of searching, we both knew we’d finally found it and could forge ahead!

Mr & Mrs Simunic
The Brief

The clients were refurbishing their rooftop apartment themselves and had turned two rooms into a single, open-plan kitchen and living space. They wanted this new room to have an industrial New York vibe to make the most of the double-height ceiling and extensive views across London. They liked the idea of a burnished brass worksurface and wanted to have stainless steel and wood to offset the polished concrete effect on the chimney breasts. The couple entertains often so instead of having lots of storage in the kitchen, making the space look over-full, they were turning a small adjoining room into a walk-in pantry.

The designer's solution features a burnished brass-fronted island as the standout feature of the newly created double-height room. Behind it, dark grey laminated cabinets with black-stained oak frames provide a striking contrast, while a vintage-oiled solid oak work surface adds warmth and cohesion to the overall look. As the hand-etched and sealed brass isn't suitable as a kitchen work surface, it elegantly wraps around the island's frontispieces instead. Positioned on a black plinth to create a floating effect and set against the dark, ultra-matt laminate backdrop, the island radiates a warm glow in the room's natural light.

Special Features

Practical beauty: the extra deep moulded stainless steel double sink is surrounded by a matching stainless steel worktop, and to protect the wall surface, a sliver of vintage-oiled oak protects the wall surface.

Finishing touches: bespoke stainless-steel shelves on coordinating brackets add a further industrial-style note to the scheme.
